Happy 60th Birthday to my dad, Misha! My father is a pretty awesome guy if you’re lucky enough to know him. He’s a tenured Professor of Psychology at Fresno State, owns and runs a martial art school, is a 6th degree black belt, a writer, and has always been one of my biggest supporters.
When I was young and decided I wanted to try and make it to the Olympics, he thought I could. When I had to quit high school after my sophomore year to train full time, he told me I’d be just fine. When I was homeless and literally living out of my car, trying to get ready for the World Cup in Vietnam after a knee surgery, he reminded me that I had goals and choices. If my goal was to be ready to compete, then I knew the hard choices I had to make to get there.
When I wanted to retire after not being selected for the 2004 Olympic Team, he helped me believe that I wasn’t done yet. And when it finally was time to retire in 2008, he helped me see there was life after my sport…
And when I started talking about leaving grad school at UCLA and opening up a CrossFit gym, he was one of the few who never doubted me for a second and urged me go big on this adventure too!
So on behalf of all of us here at CrossFit High Voltage, Happy Birthday Dad! We probably wouldn’t be doing any of this without you!

Right ON! Awesome story dude! Happy Birthday to your POPS!
Wishing your father a happy birthday, and though it doesn’t need saying, congratulations on opening and running such a great gym– I’m proud to be a part of it.
