Thursday is here it’s April…and you got it…more awesome Member Spotlight time! Let’s keep the good times rolling with Krystal Avila!

Krystal is the winner of the Apprentice Division for Fittest in Burbank Challenge during the Sectional WODs. She was one of the people who when she first came in and was pretty timid. I remember her first day – she came with her friend Aime who’s also a Vixen now and tried to do her WOD in the corner…yeah that’s not going to happen! I didn’t throw her in the middle of the room but I made sure she was part of the group. From there it was on to pull ups and a 215# Deadlift! Who knows what’s next….read up and show her some love in comments!

Q: Describe your first work out for us…and (say it with me now) We Want The Deets!

My first crossfit workout was a Saturday Morning WOD and I went into it extremely reluctant.  I didn’t know anything about crossfit Aime Del Valle manipulated me into going.   I was so nervous but I got a good vibe right away when I saw how incredibly friendly and non judgemental everyone was. I was completely dead after the workout so I really don’t even remember the hour I was there. I just remember walking out feeling faint and praying that I wouldn’t face plant before I got to the car….I didn’t I just laid on Aime’s floor for an hour in my quiet shame.

Q: Before joining High Votlage when did you know something had to change?

I was working out 5 days a week for 2 hours and my body had plateaued. I was so completely bored at the gym it was becoming a daily struggle to force myself to go. I didn’t feel like I was gaining anything from the time I was putting in anymore.

Q: Can you describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience for us?

By far the most memorable experience for me was the open sectional’s week 4 WOD of 150 wall balls 90 double unders and 30 muscle ups.  Anyone who has seen the bleeding welts and black bruises on the backs of my arms after my failed attempts to do double unders  in a WOD can attest to the fact that to say that I’ve struggled with this skill is an understatement. My only goal for that week’s workout was to finish the wall balls in the 12 minutes they gave us. I don’t know what finally clicked maybe it was the pressure of competition but I got through the wall balls and flew through the double unders without mutilating my body!

Q: Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CFHV?

Actually the physical gains I’ve made through Crossfit are only half of the beneficial impacts on my life that I’ve seen. Crossfit has also been a source of release for a lot of emotional baggage I was carrying around prior. It’s been challenging but strangely therapeutic!

Q: When have you used CrossFit outside of the box?

The stamina I’ve developed from Crossfit has transferred over to my everyday life. I just feel stronger and faster at everything I do.

Q: Most idolized fellow Volt or Vixen?

I hate to admit it but Tim is inspiring pretty much on a daily basis. The things I’ve seen him do are amazing and the fact that he still is so humble and genuinely wants everyone to succeed is such a source of motivation and encouragement.

Q: What is your favorite cheat meal?

Anything and EVERYTHING from the Portos Bakery.

Q: How has getting in shape changed your professional life?

Proving to myself that I’m capable of doing things I never imagined I could do has given me confidence that is present in my professional life. I have the belief in myself that I can do anything if I work hard for it and that is incredibly valuable.

Q: What is your one year CrossFit goal?

If I can get to where I can do at least one Muscle up Id be happy!!!
