Tuesday: Curt’s Got The Spotlight!
Tuesday’s here! Guess what we’re putting someone in the spotlight and today it’s Curt’s turn!
Curt has been a member of High Voltage for over 3 years now and it shows in his ongoing results. He’s always focused on improving he’s a blast to work out with…and on top of that he’s an awesome Chiropractor who can put your back in alignment!
Q: Describe your first work out…and YES…we want the deets!
I don’t remember too many specifics about my 1st workout but I remember that it involved front squats and I had difficulty walking or sitting for several days. I was coaching my sons baseball team at the time (9-10 yr olds then) and we had a game the next night every time I tried to sit down the kids laughed hysterically.
Q: Before joining CrossFit High Voltage when did you know something had to change?
I had let myself go for a few years was up to 265-270 lbs was closing in on 40 my “fat pants” were getting tight and my 20th HS reunion was coming up.
Q: Describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience for us.
Double Unders had always vexed me. It took me about a year to even get one and another 6 months to string more than 2 together. Wall balls always seem to kick my but too So a few weeks ago when one of the open workouts was Karen (150 wall balls) + 90 DU’s then into muscle-ups I set a goal to at least finish the DU’s. It was a 12 minute amrap and my previous best Karen time was 10:30… it was going to be tough. I managed the DU’s in about 8:30 took a 30 sec. rest and finished my last DU with 1 second to go. It was the worst pain I’d ever been in after a workout but felt so good.
Q: Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CrossFit High Voltage.
Definitely in how I interact with my 2 boys. I’m able to be much more active when I coach my older sons baseball team. He also likes to run and we’re able to do 5k’s together. My younger son loves to wrestle and I’m able to do that with him much more often.
Q: Has there been a time that you’ve used CrossFit outside of the box?
I’ve integrated much of the dynamic stretching and met-con workouts into my coaching. It’s fun to work with a group of kids and see them not only improve their overall strength and flexibility but then to also see the benefits of it during the games. I’ve also done a few “mud runs” which are pretty fun.
Q: Who is your most idolized fellow Volt or Vixen.
I always enjoy working out with the “OG 12:30” crew but I’m always a little more motivated when I’m with the other 40+ guys… especially Chris Todd and Victor. They definitely motivate me to keep going. ( I also miss my friends who have moved away..Scott D.T. and Boult)
Q: What is your favorite cheat meal?
There’s a bakery by my house called the “Kupcake Kitchen” They are my kryptonite.
Q: How has getting in shape changed your professional life?
Crossfit has made a huge difference for me professionally. I’m a Chiropractor so I’m working with people with health issues all day. First off being healthier myself I believe gives me more credibility when I talk to my patients about living a healthy lifestyle. Second I’ve really learned a lot about the importance of mid line stabilization flexibility and its relation to back pain. I’m able to use what I’ve learned to help teach my patients about the importance of doing core strengthening work. Third It’s really driven home the point that health doesn’t come from a prescription bottle. I’m much more demanding of my patients that if they really want to make a change in their lives get out of pain and live a long healthy life it takes hard work and consistency….and no one else can do it for you.
Q: What is your one year CrossFit goal?
As much as I want to be the guy to win the crossfit games I know that’s not reality at this point in my life. My one year goal is to stay healthy stay consistent and stay injury free. (A muscle-up would be pretty cool)
Q: How long have you been CrossFitting for?
It was 3 years in March.
