Member Spotlight Time!
It’s Thursday…time for our favorite blog game…no not that one – it’s Member Spotlight time! This Thursday’s installment is John Clauss. When John first came to us he tried to use the nick name ‘Santa’ Clauss. Nope not in my gym. He quickly became John Clauss Van Damn. Boom! Nickname upgrade. Even better we can shorten it to JCVD.
JCVD is a blast to have in class – he comes into the box at every training session ready for jokes and sweat. He comes to us from Rob Orlando’s box in Connecticut so I’m making sure he lifts an appropriately heavy amount of things out of respect (and because it’s really good for you to lift heavy of course).
So read up show JCVD some love in comments and I’ll see you all Thursday for some more awesomeness at the box.
Q: Describe your first work out…AND WE WANT THE DEETS!!!!!!
My first workout at CFHV was “Angie.” I ended up tearing my hands around pullup 37 but I was encouraged by that large mammoth of a man you all seem to call Bolt to finish the workout and I pushed through and completed it. After I looked at the board with my bloody hands and saw that my score was abysmal I knew I was in the right place.
Q: Before joining CrossFit High Voltage when did you know something had to change?
I’ve been CrossFitting for about a year but I never really stuck with it. I always went to my old box about 2 or 3 times a week and just did workouts that catered to my strengths. I knew that I needed to find a gym that was going to help me become the very best version of myself.
Q: Can you describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience for us?
My most memorable crossfit experience happened very recently when I hit 30 Double Unders which was a big time pr for me. I’ve been struggling with Double Unders for a year and stringing together 2 was like climbing Mount Everest to me. When I hit 30 in a row I started screaming and pumping my fists like a meathead but hey what can I say I was stoked. To me CrossFit is about continuing to push ahead no matter how dejected and frustrated you are. Failing in life and CrossFit is inevitable – it’s the courage to continue that defines you.
Q: Can you tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CrossFit High Voltage?
I’m currently training to become an Officer in the United States Marine Corps and I knew when I first moved out to California that I had to find a gym that was going to push me to level’s that I have not reached before. Attaining a perfect score on the Marine Corps PFT is very difficult but I know that I will and I owe that to the community and coaches at CrossFit High Voltage.
Q: Has there been a time that you’ve used CrossFit outside of the box?
Everything that I do at CFHV will be used if I am able to achieve my big goal of becoming an officer in the Marine Corps.
Q: Who is your most idolized fellow Volt or Vixen?
This is a tie between Tim and Matt. Anytime I look into their beard‘s I am mesmerized. On a side note I have a crazy little theory that when Josh Murillo isn’t coaching or Xfiting he is patrolling the streets of Burbank and protecting us all.
Q: What is your favorite cheat meal?
I cheat a lot. If we compared my eating to being married I would be sued for adultery a lot!
Q: How has getting in shape changed your professional life?
I can make mojitos faster than any other bartender in LA. Anyone wanna test me?!?!
Q: What is your one year CrossFit goal?
My one-year crossfit goal is to pass the trial by fire test for the advanced class and literally breathe fire out of my mouth.
Q: How long have you been CrossFitting?
I’ve been crossfitting for about a year and half and will never consider another athletic training program. No program prepares you for the mental physical and emotional challenges as crossfit does. See when most people can’t breathe can barely see straight and every bone and muscle in their body is screaming to stop that is when our work begins.
