Thursday: Member Spotlight Time!

Trumpets DJ lights…fire pit bbq…all systems go. It’s Thursday let’s kick off our Member Spotlight!

After Dan’s awesome write up on Tuesday what other way could we find out more from this mysterious Monica lady other than drop her some love in the Member Spotlight? Monica’s been training with us for 2 years now and is well on her way to becoming a bonafide badass. Read up & show her some love in comments then have a blast on Benchmark Thursday!

¬†Describe your first work out for us…and we’ve got to have…THE DEETS!

I was very nervous and to be honest a bit intimidated by the whole idea of CrossFit because I had never done anything like it and I wasn’t too sure I would be able to keep up! My one on one intro class with Tyler was a challenge in itself! I remember having to do med ball cleans and wall squats for the warm up on my first day. The med ball cleans were tough for me and I remember wondering if I would ever get the hang of it! I was hooked after day one though and even though I was huffing and puffing through my first class I knew I had found something special at CrossFit High Voltage!

Monica post Fight Gone Bad 6

When did you know something had to change before joining CrossFit High Voltage?

I had done boot camp spin cardio kickboxingstep aerobics and whatever other group classes my regular gym had to offer. Eventually I stopped seeing results and I would get bored. I really wanted to find something that would challenge me and push me beyond my limits in a way that I hadn’t been pushed before. I had heard about CrossFit from someone in my boot camp class and it sounded exactly like what I had been looking for.

Can you describe your most memorable CrossFit experience for us?

Hands down doing Murph with my dad last year! He had just turned 71 and was able to complete the entire workout with me as my partner. It was one hell of a challenge and the last mile run totally sucked but we got through it together one step at a time. It’s a day I’ll never forget and I feel so blessed to be able to share that experience with him. I can only hope that I’ll be able to do a challenging workout like that when I’m that age! He is definitely an inspiration.

Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CrossFit High Voltage.

Joining CrossFit High Voltage has totally boosted my confidence all around. I realize that I can accomplish anything that I set my mind to. I’m doing things at our box that I never thought I would be able to do when I started two years ago. I’m really good about keeping a workout journal and I love to go back and see how far I’ve come.

When have you used CrossFit outside of the box?

The lessons I’ve learned though CrossFit have spilled over into other aspects of my life by helping me remove any obstacles in front of me. I’m better at facing them head on and turning challenges into opportunities.

Monica gettin’ after it!

Who is your most idolized fellow Volt or Vixen – spread the Member Spotlight Love!

It’s hard for me to pick one person because everyone at our box inspires me in one way or another! Watching my fellow Volts and Vixens do things I can’t do pushes me into working harder because I know that there was a point when they were at the same place I am.

What are some your favorite cheat meals and why?

Hmm.. Probably a grilled cheese from Inn & Out (both raw and grilled onions) with french fries animal style. I have a terrible sweet tooth so I’d have to wash it down with a strawberry shake.

How has getting in shape changed your professional life?

I work in the fashion industry and it’s a very fast paced and often stressful environment. Getting in shape is the BEST stress relief and I totally rely on it to get through my work day. No matter how rough my day is at work I can always count on leaving everything behind on the gym floor.

What are some of your CrossFit goals for the next 365 days?

To finally get a pull up with no band! I’m so close but still not there yet.
