Describe your first work out (were you nervous? were you scared? did you puke? give us details!)

Cindy was my first workout. I did it at CrossFit Newport Beach in January of 2007.  I just completed the police academy and I really didn’t want to return to the monotonous 24 hour fitness gym workout. Not that there is anything wrong with them I just wanted to challenge myself a little more. I was nervous and had butterflies the entire day leading up to this workout. When the time arrived I realized I was the only one in the class I don’t know how they called it a class with only one participant but they did. That made it even more nerve-racking because I really couldn’t blend in or hide anywhere.  The trainer/coach chose Cindy as the workout due to the fact these movements were the only movements I could do somewhat decently. I couldn’t kip very well and I didn’t know what the hell a butterfly pull-up was so I did the entire workout with strict pull-ups. Big mistake…I got through 20 rounds and couldn’t move my arms for a week.

When did you know something had to change before joining CrossFit High Voltage?

I realized something had to change one night I was at 24 hour fitness for about 3 hours. I would probably spend an hour standing in front of the mirror doing arm curls staring at my biceps Trying to “feel the pump.” I would then work my shoulders for an hour or so finish it off with abs and a sauna session. I thought to myself “when am I ever going to just use my bicep for anything?” In CrossFit lingo…the majority of my workouts were not functional.

Describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience.

I moved to The Valley from Huntington Beach in October of 2010. I had my mind made up already…I was going to find a gym to attend until I did my “tour” of the valley and moved back to HB. Then I came across High Voltage…and the rest is history. I am now very reluctant to move away because I don’t want to leave CrossFit High Voltage. All of it is extremely memorable…The athletes the friends the family-like atmosphere the great competition and coaching. I’m very lucky and fortunate to have found CrossFit High Voltage. Each day at the gym is memorable for a variety of reasons. It’s hard to choose one memorable moment but I would have to say 2011 CrossFit games. Just being part of the greatest team for the greatest gym with the greatest athletes was an honor…Honor is not a big enough word to describe how lucky and overjoyed I was to compete for our gym…yeah that was definitely memorable!!!

Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CrossFit High Voltage.

I’ve played sports and competed in different types of activities since I was 4 years old. I love outdoor activities and I love to compete. All of these areas were impacted by my decision to join CrossFit High Voltage but none more than my profession (Police Officer). As a Police I’ve come across some “less than reputable” individuals at times who would like to physically harm my partner and I. The strength endurance fast twitch muscles and skills I’ve gained and developed at CrossFit High Voltage have significantly helped me in some unfortunate situations that have come my way.

When have you used CrossFit outside of the box?

The greatest thing about these constantly varied high intensity functional movements is they can be applied to many different walks of life. I love outdoor activities (surfinghikingetc) the more fit and athletic I am the more enjoyable these activities have become.

Most idolized fellow Volt or Vixen.

At High Voltage we have so many great athletes. I learn so much from each Volt and Vixen I encounter everyday for different reasons. This is one of the aspects that makes CrossFit High Voltage the Best!!!

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Peanut Butter and Jelly without a question!!!!! I love that stuff. It’s the sodium free no sugar added peanut butter from whole foods and the seedless blackberry preserves from either sprouts or Trader Joes!!! I’ll eat it by the jar.

How has getting in shape changed your professional life?

I wear a uniform to work everyday. I feel as if I should look somewhat neat and professional while at work. Physical ability comes into play a lot in my profession…whether its trying out for a specialized unit or standing on my feet for 12-15 hours being in shape has made these obstacles a little easier to deal with.

One year CrossFit goal?

I sustained a pretty bad back injury a few years ago that really limited my strength & mobility for some movements. The movement most affected by this injury is my Deadlift… I want to pull 4 wheels one year from today.

How long have you been CrossFitting?

Approximately 5 years. I’ve had a few ups & downs in those 5 years but it’s reassuring to know CrossFit has been constant reliable and humbling during this time.
