Training vs. Testing: PART TWO!

Today we take a look at two types of CrossFitters: the “trainer” and the “tester”

The “testing CrossFitter” will look at any WOD and immediately think in terms of what it will take to do it as RX. This athlete will have a mindset that they will do whatever is necessary finish the WOD, despite their abilities at the prescribed movements or loads.

In this case it could manifest in some really sloppy HSPUs, head slamming into the abmat, no lockout at the top, peeling off the wall before lockout, etc…

The ironic thing here is that to carry the above testing mindset into each day of training will likely ensure that you never progress to the point of being able to cleanly RX that WOD. You actually are training sloppy movement patterns and taking your fitness back a step.

Almost every CrossFit athlete has been guilty of this at some point, myself included. I can only make these realizations because I have experienced it myself.

The “training CrossFitter” will look at any WOD and think how they can approach the workout in a way to best improve themselves. If you are not solid with the movements or loads, it’s a chance to practice the skill set or move on to another form of scaling to train stability and strength.

One of the best ways to develop this mindset and a training culture is on days where there isn’t a prescribed weight, but the instruction is just to perform the movement “heavy”.  Don’t be thrown off track by the lack of specific pass/fail RX.

Instead the RX tells you to train the movement at a weight that is challenging to YOU. The mental freedom this creates is powerful. You may increase in weight each round, you may try to really challenge yourself the first few rounds and then back off. Or you may stick with a weight that allows you to have perfect form if you are still at that stage of training.

Creating a culture of training at High Voltage is a way to take the first step to ensure fitness longevity for each athlete and community culture longevity for all of you.

“KALSU”

Every minute on the minute do 5 BURPEES then fill the remaining time with 135/85 pound thrusters. Goal is to hit 100 total thrusters for time.

Scaled Options:

Thruster Weight – Scaled appropriately
Burpee Count – Scale to 3 reps EMOM instead of 5
