I’m really proud of today’s featured member. He’s improved so much since his first day, and has been a leader in the Community & role model to others.
Not only does that include co-captaining our CFHV Spartan Team this past December, but he was also one of our first ever member guest blogs back in October 2016. Check it out here: http://www.crossfithighvoltage.com/2016/10/11/special-member-guest-blog/
Today you’ll have a chance to get to know him a little better, so sit back, relax, and meet:
What’s your name?
Describe your first work out here at Crossfit High Voltage:
What struck me most about my first workout was how the coach (Maurice) saw me in the group, knew I was new to CFHV because he hadn’t seen me before, and made a point of introducing himself, asking me a few questions to gauge where I was at and generally made me feel really welcomed. Then he kicked my ass. I couldn’t finish my first WOD. I remember getting about half way through and having to stop and sit down. Mo came over to make sure I was OK. I was, except for the fact that I was really out of shape.
Before joining High Voltage, when did you know something had to change?
I’d tried different exercise routines my whole life and never really fell in love with anything enough to make me do it regularly. And I don’t have the time or discipline to walk in to a “regular” gym and put together a good regimen by myself. I exercise mostly for the emotional and psychological effect, not to get ripped or lose weight (though I will take both of those). For the last couple years leading up to joining CFHV, I just really felt like I needed to do something for myself to get and maintain more positive emotions.
Describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience so far.
There is no single experience that stands out. But what does stand out is the awesome community. From all the coaches to all the members, it’s just such a warm, welcoming and encouraging community. That and probably running the Spartan Sprint last month with a team from CFHV. We had a great time getting ready (Thanks, Derrick!) and running the race as a team. It was a great way to put in the work and then see the result first hand. AROO!
Outside of High Voltage, what kind of work do you do? Give yourself a plug!
I work for Disney ABC TV Group making sure you and your kids have plenty of Disney shows to watch on TV and streaming.
How has getting in shape changed your professional life?
It’s made me “that” guy at work who will talk to anybody about WODs, kettlebells, snatches, jerks, squats and wall balls.
Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join High Voltage.
I just turned 50 and I feel like I am in the best shape of my whole life. Mentally and physically.
When have you used CrossFit outside of the box?
I’m an avid obstacle course racer, and just about everything you do in an OCR (except diving into mud pits) is something we work on in CrossFit. That and the time my sister challenged me at Thanksgiving to see who could hold a plank longer. I won.
Who is your most idolized fellow community member?
I hate to pick out just one person, ‘cuz everyone is awesome. But Derrick McCray is my hero. Not only is he a model athlete with a body cut from stone and a great coach who puts together some of the most original WODs you’ll ever suffer through, but he’s one of the best human beings you’ll ever be lucky enough to know. The man is kindness and integrity personified.
What is your one year or next CrossFit goal?
Next goal is to finish the the Spartan Stadium Sprint in April in under one hour and top ten for my age group.
What is your favorite & least favorite movement or WOD?
Favorite moment is either LongWOD Sundays with Dizzle and Derrick, or MO MONDAY!!! Least favorite is anytime burpees are required. Hate ’em, hate ’em, hate ’em.
What is your favorite cheat meal?
Burger and onion rings. And a chocolate malt.
If you had to describe CFHV in one sentence:
