What’s your name?

Donzell Lewis

Describe your first time trying CrossFit:

I had fun! I got stuck on the perfect stretch and I had never used a PVC pipe to stretch before so I thought that was odd. But when I walked out I thought to myself…”that wasn’t so bad”.

Before starting CrossFit, when did you know something had to change?

I’ve always kept a healthy lifestyle and have done a lot of cardio. I started Crossfit after a break up and at the time the break up was so raw that I couldn’t focus in the gym. One day I was on the treadmill and about 5 seconds of a Beyonce love song started to play on my iPod, I foolishly left my iPod on shuffle. By time I made it to my iPod to press skip on the song I had already started to cry. Then I said “oh hell naw to myself”, walked out of the gym crying and accepted that I was a hot mess. I decided I needed to work out with people and not be left alone so I came home and signed up for a group-on for an intro to Crossfit. I was excited to workout in new surroundings being distracted by a new sport with people I had never met.

Describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience so far.

The first time I reached the top of the rope climb! I had only seen the rope climb in gym scenes in movies and thought it was the most weird thing ever. I had never climbed a rope nor did I ever want to. But I admit that when I rang that bell for the first time in the MVA gym I felt like a super athlete. Also, there’s the time when Travis taught me how to do a handstand. I would never do handstands in gym classes because I thought I would land on my head, break my neck and die. I avoided them as long as I could until Travis took the time to teach me how to make it happen.

Outside the box, what kind of work do you do? Give yourself a plug!

I am an Actor, comedian, acting teacher, drag queen. I know it’s a long list! As an actor I’ve done a lot of theatre, recently filmed several webseries and indie features. September through May I run an elementary school theatre program and youth acting workshops. I’m an improv comedian on a team at 2nd City Hollywood and am a featured performer in many UCB shows. And every so often you will find me dressed in drag putting on an dynamic show, I am also the 2017 winner of the UCB Drag Race competition, my next performance is in August!

How has getting in shape changed your professional life?

hmmm..it’s more so changed my dating life *wink* . Honestly, I’ve always had a fit frame so as a performer it hasn’t changed anything. But because I have more definition I will admit I get a lot more dates…and I’m not complaining.

Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CrossFit:

It would be how Crossfit helped me to healthily move past my breakup. Like I said, I’ve always been doing some type of fitness be it running, dance classes, martial arts, the gym etc but I did all those things before my breakup. Doing Crossfit after my breakup gave me something new to focus on and introduced me to a new community of people. It helped remind me of how amazing this city is!

When is a time you’ve been able to use CrossFit outside of the box?

I don’t have a moment that I can name…as of yet.

Who is your most idolized fellow community member?

That’s hard, I enjoy so many people in this community! But Coach Lindsay is one of my favs because of her wonderful personality, she pushes me hard and doesn’t let me slack off. Plush she is still doing Crossfit with a baby in her belly! If I had a baby on the way I’d find every way for the entire world to pamper me. I’d pull up into the Ralph’s parking lot and convince someone to do my groceries for me while I sit comfortably in my air conditioned car. But that’s not Lindsay, she’s still kicking butt and hasn’t slowed down…I’ve got no excuse to slack off.

What is your one year or next CrossFit goal?

I want to participate in the Crossfit games. I was too scared to try it this year.

What is your favorite & least favorite movement or WOD?

Those damn kipping pull ups. I just can’t get my body to learn how to handle the coordination of movements.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Donuts, burgers, fries, pasta dishes…the list can go on. Or just give me a bottle of red wine and I’ll take care of it.

If you had to describe CrossFit in one sentence:

The sport that challenges your entire body while empowering me to feel like a warrior.
