Member Spotlight: Irving Flores
What’s your name?
Irving Flores (aka, notorious I.R.V.)
Describe your first time trying CrossFit:
Traumatizing. Memorable. Traum-orable. It hurt so good that I, like all you crazies out there, came back for MORE butt-whuppin.
Before starting CrossFit, when did you know something had to change?
Honestly, I was just looking around for a gym to help me with Olympic weightlifting. I’d never even considered CrossFit before. As with most of us, I’d had a less than favorable impression of CrossFit. Never truly realizing the amazingly soul crushing, fitness transformation, awesomeness factory that it could be. That it is. After a few Oly sessions I decided to try Crossfit, and several layers of torn callous, scraped chins and bruised shoulders later I took the plunge all the way! WOD for life!
Describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience so far.
A toss up between my first MU, my first open (16.1) and my first well thought out post WOD cheat meal. Pecan pie, pizza, sweet potato fries, box of kettle glazed donuts, slater’s burgers chased with another pecan pie. Ok, so it’s not really that well thought out. But my tummy don’t care.
Outside the box, what kind of work do you do? Give yourself a plug!
I chase earthquakes for a living (seismologist). Elusive, little quakers! I also apparently keep the movie industry alive, as I routinely watch movies (the same one!) anywhere from 3-5 in one weekend. You’re welcome, Uncle Sam.
How has getting in shape changed your professional life?
Routinely getting that “Oh, Crossfit, huh? You must really enjoy that cult!” look from everyone at work. Grumble, grumble, grumble…I’ll just tire flip your desk out the window here.
Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CrossFit:
My evenings. Mornings. Weekends. Pretty much spend more time on amazon ordering workout supplies, mobility equipment and new shirts.
When is a time you’ve been able to use CrossFit outside of the box?
Now that I’m traveling for the summer, I get to see how creative I can be with all sorts of crazy “hotel” and “traveling” WODS. I’ve also used my newfound skills to help my mom with her new TV. She loves it when I show off.
Who is your most idolized fellow community member?
Honestly??? myself, of course. But, for the purposes of sincerity, it’s Krystal Avila. When I first started Crossfitting at MVA, I did ONLY 6am sessions for about 8 months. Krystal was pretty much my ONLY coach during that time. And, as it’s a hard class to fill consistently, I was pretty much her only student. So, all the cool tricks, lifts and skills I learned from Krystal. She’s rad. #builtbykrystal
What is your one year or next CrossFit goal?
Dunk a kettlebell through a regulation sized basketball hoop! Or a sub-40 Rx Murph. Or, maybe both!
What is your favorite & least favorite movement or WOD?
Favorite: loading weights like a boss! or, run a mile for time. pretty sure most Crossfitters agree with this one. Least Favorite: toss up between sotts press or bear complex. humility is my workout partner here.
What is your favorite cheat meal?
Steamed broccoli with a dash of cinnamon but luckily, uhh, I mean sadly, I can’t find that at the local donut shop! so….buttermilk bars it is!
