Member Spotlight: Ally Rennell
I’ve left today’s spotlight unedited, so be prepared for some colorful language. You know what? I wouldn’t want it any other way, because that is part of the beautiful charm of her soul.
She came to us already a great athlete, but her progression since then is really amazing. I still don’t think she quite understands how good she really is, and you can see it every time she surprises herself with a new PR.
…I’m not surprised though. She is a true warrior…but also one of the most funny, goofy, and magnetic people you’ll meet. You’ll know her by the laughs of others that surround her as she entertains them with her East coast wit. Today I bring you:
What’s your name?
Describe your first work out here at Crossfit High Voltage:
I had just moved here from Massachusetts and was testing out a few gyms in the area. The second the workout was over I said to Mike, “This is the one.” The workout was purposeful, the space was amazing, and the people were super welcoming!
Before joining High Voltage, when did you know something had to change?
I was Crossfitting in MA before coming here, but I knew I needed to join Crossfit when I threw up after my first 7-minute consultation. They had me row, do some wall balls, and burpees. I knew I wasn’t in ideal shape, but FUCK, that threw me for a skinny-fat loop. I joined the next day. I’ve been doing it for almost 6 years.
Describe your most memorable CrossFit Experience so far.
Almost passing the Firebreathers 2 test! I got my first ring muscle-up during this workout (which I did NOT think was going to happen) and then 2 after that! I didn’t set up any of the weights for what came after the muscle-ups, and my judge (Dizzle!) and my friendly onlookers (thanks guys!) ran around like crazy people trying to get me set up. I only had 10 double-unders left, but couldn’t have been any happier!
Outside of High Voltage, what kind of work do you do? Give yourself a plug!
I’m a writer! I work professionally as a Brand Writer at Hasbro, the toy company. And, in my personal time, I am working on writing a novel.
How has getting in shape changed your professional life?
I’m more energetic! First impressions are so important and when colleagues look at me (I hope!) they see a strong, healthy woman. This perception is important and speaks to my work ethic, not only in, but outside of the office.
Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join High Voltage.
It helped me make some of my best friends in Cali! Like I said, I moved from the other side of the country and High Voltage provided me with an instant community. These men and women have become more than just gym mates, they’re best friends and family in my home away from home.
When have you used CrossFit outside of the box?
All the time! I am the first friend people ask to help them move! My guy friends ask me to do the heavy lifting over their fellow gents.
Who is your most idolized fellow community member?
Christina Ronstadt! She is always smiling (even through her recent injury). She works hard and she makes me laugh. So grateful for that, especially on one of those tough nights when you’re not hitting the numbers you want or your lungs died in the first minute of the WOD.
What is your one year or next CrossFit goal?
I have so many! I want to work on stringing together my ring muscle-ups and bar muscle-ups. I want to learn how to butterfly successfully and become more efficient at handstand push-ups.
What is your favorite & least favorite movement or WOD?
Favorite: Cleans Least favorite: Pull-ups
What is your favorite cheat meal?
OH MY GOD, if you know me, you know all my meals are cheat meals. Pizza and pasta are my weaknesses.
If you had to describe CFHV in one sentence:
My happy place, my safe haven, my playground, my therapist’s office, my girls’ night, my classroom. I could go on and on.
